The PGA TOUR Champions Tour tournament is a competition among all official event champions of the 2014 and 2015 seasons, winners of the majors since 2011 and eight professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major.
The Pro Am is on Tuesday & Wednesday Jan. 19-20 with the 3 day 54 hole 1.8 million dollar purse play on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21-23. Tickets at the gate are $25 one day pass and $40 for tournament week. Golf Channel will have a live broadcast each afternoon. The final round being on Saturday means everyone can stay home and watch football on Sunday!!!!
It is fun to see David Marr III, Mark Rolfing, and Jay Radzavicz all with NBC Golf Channel return each year to be part of the broadcasts and report from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship. All have been big supporters of the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association. Mark is back in the broadcast booth for the Mitsubishi Electric Championship after some intense cancer treatments.
The field of 44 players include defending Champion Miguel Angel Jimenez, Fred Couples, Fred Funk, Jay Haas, Tom Watson, Colin Montgomerie, Kenny Perry, Olin Browne, Lee Janzen, John Cook, Russ Cochran, Mark Calcavecchia. Sponsor exemptions include Peter Jacobsen, Tom Kite, Davis Love III, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Loren Roberts, Vijay Singh, Craig Stadler and Hale Irwin, the only player to have played in all of the Mitsubishi Electric Championships at Hualalai and a multiple winner.
While we get an opportunity to see up close Champions Tour players, I think one of the best aspects of this event for the last 18 years is the funds that have been raised for local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the volunteers and in turn the PGA TOUR Champions Tour Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation, The Daniel Sayre Foundation and Big Island Junior Golf. Over a million dollars has come back into our Big Island charities from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai.
While players are good with the fans, I always enjoy watching how they interact with the juniors. Tom Watson and Hale Irwin each year have a special interaction with the Big Island Junior Golfers who are sponsored by Mitsubishi Electric. They joke, and and ask them about their golf games and interact with them as they sign autographs.
