Imagine if you could visit the lush rainforests of Costa Rica, the dry, hot desserts of Arizona, the green rolling hills of Ireland, and the ice caps of Mount Fuji, all in one day.  Hawaii Island, otherwise known as the Big Island, only takes up 4,000 sq miles of the Pacific Ocean, but it is home to the four of the five major climate zones found on the planet.  It’s one of the most ecologically diverse places in the world ---a place where you can ski on snow and, in a matter of hours, surf in the warm ocean.

According to Pao-Shin Chu, the Hawaii Climatologist and professor in the department of meteorology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, there are between eight and 11 subclimates on the Big Island.  “It is

With the continued upturn in the economy, Hawaii home and condo construction is busier than in previous years.  There’s even a new show called “Building Hawaii,” debuting January 1 on HGTV that features a local company, Dickinson General Contracting, building homes from Keauhou to Kohala. With all of the new construction in Hawaii, and on the Big Island in particular, this is the ideal locale for a second home.

As you're considering buying in Hawaii, take a look at these questions below and discuss them with your family, realtor and investment counselor:

  • Is this vacation home for you, family, friends, and business associates only?  Or is it a vacation rental whose income you want to use to pay down the mortgage and/or develop as revenue?

Last week the New York Times published an article titled, “The United States of Thanksgiving” with recipes that “evoke each of the 50 states.”  I immediately searched for Hawaii’s dish and saw they listed “Mochi Stuffed Rice.”  While I never tasted that dish I can tell you that a favorite at most Thanksgiving tables here on the Big Island is “Kalua Turkey.”  A friend of mine has a big family and they’re placing three 20lb turkeys in their imu (a type of underground oven traditionally seen at luaus). The turkeys cook in the imu all day (Really! 8+ hours) beneath a blanket of Feeding wild turkeybanana leaves, ti leaves, coconut palm leaves and other aromatic vegetation.  The result is meat that's juicy, succulent and so thoroughly moist it falls off the bone...
